What happens when a mini cow spends a lot of time with 12 dogs? Well, you get an abundance of cuteness! And perhaps some identity issues.
This is what happened after Moonpie was saved from being sold at an auction.
Janice Wolf is the owner of the Arkansas-based animal sanctuary Rocky Ridge Refuge. The refuge was what Janice really wanted to have for a long time. She has always had a burning passion for caring for animals with unique needs and this was her way of helping them.
Her sanctuary has between 50 and 60 animals at any given time. Some are awaiting adoption, while others call it their permanent home.
Janice could not stand attending animal auctions. She abhorred seeing how the animals were sold like they were ordinary things. So she sent a friend to an auction to see if any animals needed help.
At that time, her pal saw Moonpie. At auctions, mini cows are uncommon, so they immediately decided to get her.
When they took Moonpie to the ranch, they were unable to place her with the other rescued cows. She was still too little and required bottle feeding. Therefore, they decided to place her with the dogs.
The dogs lived in Janice’s home. As it was cold and raining outside, she had no choice but to keep Moonpie there. All other enclosed and heated spaces were occupied.
Fortunately, the dogs did not mind having Moonpie around. They were even pleased to have the calf among them, especially Spackle, a deaf white Terrier. The senior dog formed an instant attachment with the calf.
Each and every dog would snuggle and play with her. All of them served as surrogate mothers for Moonpie.
Eventually, Moonpie began to behave like the other dogs. She would also hold and wait to urinate and defecate outside.
As Moonpie grew, she ventured out more frequently. She and the dogs enjoyed playing outside when the weather was nice.
As she gains more independence, she will eventually be introduced to the other farm animals.
