Phaedra Barratt, an independent rescuer from a small town in Mexico, found a dog by the side of a busy road. She knew right off the bat that something was wrong because the pup didn’t move at all. He lay in the puddle of water, shivering and completely wet, and he whimpered as he saw her approaching.
The rescuers gently scooped up the dog she named Speedy and took him straight to the vet’s clinic. She wasn’t sure what caused his injury nor did she know if he’d even walk again. But she owe it to herself to help the poor pup no matter what it took.
Speedy’s prognosis wasn’t good. His hind legs were severely injured and the vet said he would never walk again. There was simply no way for him to live a normal life.
It wasn’t what Phaedra wanted to hear but the vet said she could either put the dog in a wheelchair for the rest of his years or she could choose to put him out of his misery. She had two options but she chose neither of those. Instead, she decided to do whatever she could to provide Speedy with the best life possible.
With all the help he received, Speedy did not disappoint. He defied everybody’s expectations and made himself stronger and healthier. And once he got his wheelchair, he felt like he was back on his feet and regained his freedom.
Speedy is a dog that’s always in action, and Phaedra knows where they live isn’t the best place for him. Their streets are cobblestones and there are no dog parks nearby. He needs a lot of space where he can run and she knows exactly where he will thrive – in California.
Debbie, a dog trainer, loved Speedy the moment she saw his picture. And when she finally got to hug and kiss him, she was delighted with him even more. She knew he’d do great back home and she wasn’t wrong.
The dog loved his new environment. Ever since he came come, he blossomed and he continued to thrive.
Speedy now trains to become a therapy animal. Soon, he will show people that a lot of things are possible when you don’t give up.
