Despite having to endure the cruelty of people, dogs serve as a fantastic example of unconditional love. It’s simply in their nature. And despite having a horrible past, they will still choose to love. This is just like the dog in this story.
A little white and brown mixed-breed puppy named Smokey was discovered chained to a large tree in the midst of a blazing fire near a homeless camp in Florida. West Palm Beach Fire and Rescue, led by Captain Greg Gordon, responded to the incident and were shocked by what they saw.
The poor puppy was afraid and in excruciating pain. His body was entirely burned. And no one believed he would live. Captain Gordon even said that the dog was also distressed and that he was really concerned about how long the dog would live.
Still, firefighter Marcos Orozca attempted to save the pup. He immediately transported the dog to the Peggy Adams Animal Rescue Center. From there, he was taken to a burn specialist, Doctor Federico Latimer of Jupiter Pet Emergency and Specialty Center.
Smokey was given medicinal baths and endured numerous blood transfusions and excruciating bandage changes as the doctors attempted to save this courageous puppy. During his recuperation period, he also visited the hyperbaric chamber. Despite all the abuse, agony, and sadness that Smokey went through, he regained his faith in people with the assistance, love, and care he received from his vet and carers.
Captain Gordon opted to foster Smokey instead of leaving him in a shelter when he was well enough to be discharged. Occasionally, Smokey had to return to JPESC for a follow-up examination and Gordon was constantly by his side.
However, for Smokey, it was more like a homecoming than a trip to the veterinarian. He was often positive and excited. He was always overjoyed to see the individuals who had worked so diligently to make him well.
His tail wagged wildly as he greeted every vet technician who cared for and attended to him. Upon spotting Dr. Latimer, he would become even more ecstatic. He would run to him, lick the doctor’s face, and lavish him with so much attention.
