A former stray dog named Jindol had been living with his adoptive family for months, yet he was still wary of them. He did not let anyone go near him or touch him. He preferred to stay in the veranda, which is his designated personal space.
Jindol used to roam the hills near a park with another stray dog named Geondung. However, Geondung got hit by a car and passed away. Jindol mourned the loss of his friend, and people could hear his sad howls for about two months.
A couple who brought their dogs to the park started noticing him. When Jindol saw dogs in the park, he would come down from the hill. He would approach and play with them.
Some dog owners were kind enough to greet him and let their dogs engage with him. Others tried to frighten him away and would even throw stones at him.
Jindol was captured after being shot with a tranquilizer because he was too wary of humans. He was bathed and vaccinated while still under anesthesia. Then the couple who was interested in adopting him brought him home before the anesthesia wore off.
He woke up in a very unfamiliar and confined place. The humans were also strangers to him. No wonder he would not let his guard down.
The couple had to ask for help from an animal behaviorist named Chan Jong. He showed them how to act in a non-threatening manner towards Jindol. They practiced avoiding eye contact and walking with hands in their pockets. Jindol started to let his guard down.
The next step was to let Jindol get used to his owner’s presence. They had to confine him in a very small space so that he could not avoid him. He sat quietly next to him and slowly reached out. The man was teary-eyed because he had wanted to pet Jindol ever since he arrived.
They managed to put him on a leash and lead him around the house. The man hoped that he could take him to the park along with his fur siblings. He promised to continue the training until Jindol would feel comfortable with all the members of the family.
