It is pretty easy to have a dog and let him play with you inside the home. The trouble starts when the doggo starts peeing inside the house. You cannot make the dog understand the whole process in a single day. You need training with specific techniques to create operant conditioning in the dog’s mind to pee outside whenever nature calls. Any dog can learn to pee outside. All you need is patience and the following simple techniques to change the behavior of your dog:
Build A Routine
Building a routine for puppies is quite tricky as they need to go out after every hour. Their bladder cannot hold longer than an hour. But a giant dog can hold in longer than that, and you can make them adjust to your set routine. You need to learn about their routine and make them follow that as well. For example, when you see that the dog is peeing inside, take them outside at once, and the next day, take the dog out at the same time it peed a day before.
Designate A Place
When you take out your dog for peeing, you must make sure that the doggo does the business at the same spot. A tree near the house or a place in the yard would do great for you to establish a new routine for your dog. The smell of the area will make your dog fall for the trap and pee there whenever the bladder is full. You can also let the dog chose the place where your buddy can go all by himself. A place in the yard where your dog has easy access will make things relatively easy for you.
Reward Good Behavior
There is only one way to make your dog understand that you admire his efforts to peeing outside. And that is by appreciating this new behavior. By appreciation, we mean offering them treats and patting them affection by saying, good boy or good girl. When the dog pees outside, and you offer a treat, this appreciation will make conditioning in their mind, and they will repeat the process for more goodies.
Reduce The Number Of Treats
Once you witness the increase in good behavior and your dog has learned to pee outside, reduce the treats and keep your focus on appreciating your dog. Gradually reducing the number of treats and regular appreciation will make your dog pee outside, and the behavior change will last for good.
