Fostering a dog is a rewarding experience. It doesn’t only free up space at the shelter to make room for other dogs in need, but it also helps the dog to learn about being a part of a family before they find a forever home. By becoming a foster parent for shelter dogs, you are essentially saving lives.
A woman named Whitney came across a rescue Basset Hound at the shelter named Gigi. Gigi was pregnant and Whitney knew that the shelter wasn’t a place for a pregnant dog like Gigi to give birth to her puppies. So, Whitney decided to foster Gigi and give her a much better environment to give birth to her litter. Gigi turned out to be quite an amazing dog. She loves people and she definitely adjusted quickly to her foster home.
One of the most challenging things for Whitney in terms of caring for Gigi was that she had no idea about Gigi’s prenatal care. Whitney didn’t know how many puppies that Gigi will give birth to and if Whitney had been getting adequate nutrition throughout her pregnancy. Whitney was worried if the puppies were going to be healthy.
It wasn’t long until Whitney started to notice that Gigi was going to give birth soon. Gigi was panting frequently and she was also refusing to eat. These are usually signs that pregnant dogs have when they’re about to give birth.
Thankfully, Whitney was prepared and Gigi gave birth to a huge litter of puppies. Gigi gave birth to a total of 11 puppies. There were six boys and 5 girls and all were quite healthy. Of course, Gigi only had a limited number of nipples, and Whitney and her family had to help feed the puppies.
Gigi was such an amazing mom to her puppies. She stayed with her puppies a lot and was always feeding them. When the puppies were a month old, they started going out on walks in the yard with Gigi. The adorable puppies were all over the place and they were certainly cuddly and curious.
After the puppies were weaned, Whitney was able to adopt the puppies out pretty quickly. They were so adorable that no one could resist their charms. There were a few times when Whitney was emotional when the puppies were adopted into forever homes but she was extra emotional when Gigi was finally adopted.
Whitney is glad that Gigi’s finally going to a forever home with a loving family. However, she’s also sad that Whitney’s going to be out of her life. If you’re thinking about fostering dogs, you have to expect that there are dogs that you will get attached to and you may find it hard to let them go. Here’s a video showing Whitney fostering Gigi and how it made a huge difference in Gigi’s life.
