A resident from rural Coahoma County in Mississippi was surprised one day when he heard dogs barking inside an abandoned home. The people in their neighborhood knew that no one had been living there for quite some time, and they never realized that there were animals living there.
Concerned that the creatures might be trapped and hungry, the man called the local shelter for help. Rescuers from the Tunica Humane Society were quickly mobilized. When the officers promptly arrived at the location, they found a heartbreaking situation.
10 days
Apparently, the dogs were not trapped at all. They found a way to get out of the house and roam the countryside. This made it difficult for them to round up the abandoned animals, especially since there were 19 of them.
The rescuers knew that they had a lot of work ahead of them. They can’t leave a single dog behind. They were all starving and looked emaciated. Some of them were friendly and willing to approach the rescuers. But there were others that were scared and wouldn’t go near the humans.
The friendlier dogs were taken to the shelter on the first day. But the rescuers had to bring in more manpower to catch those that were more elusive. It took them a total of 10 days to finally get all of them.
No dog left behind
Thanks to the dedicated and brave rescuers from the Tunica Humane Society, all 19 dogs were taken to the shelter, where they were given medical attention and comfortable kennels. The rescue group made a plea for foster volunteers as their facility was starting to get crowded. Eventually, some dogs moved out to foster homes while others found their new forever home.
The dogs would have suffered a terrible fate if they were not found. It was very likely that they would have starved to death. But now, they have a better future to look forward to.
