Just an inch to either direction and the bullet that went through a senior dog’s face would have been fatal. As luck would have it, the projectile may have caused a lot of damage, but it didn’t kill the pooch. Vets said that it was a one-in-a-million shot, and her survival was short of a miracle.
This story is about a 12-year-old black Labrador Retriever named Polo. The gentle pooch lives in Englewood, Colorado.
Shot point-blank
One night, while her family was out, a burglar broke into their home. As the intruder walked around the dark house, he was suddenly surprised by the appearance of a large black dog. Fear gripped the perpetrator’s heart, and he instinctively raised his gun and fired a shot.
It was a close-range assault, and the bullet tore into the dog’s face. The man then bolted, leaving the poor injured dog lying on the floor, blood oozing out of her bullet wound.
The family arrived shortly after and were mortified to see their dog, unconscious and severely injured. They wasted no time bringing her to a vet for emergency treatment.
A miracle
The vets were shocked by the extent of the dog’s injuries. One of them even said that it looked like a bomb went off inside the dog’s mouth. The bullet shattered the old dog’s jaw, and it got fractured in two places. Several of her teeth were blown away, and her tongue was almost severed.
Surprisingly though, the dog seemed to be in good spirits. After they put her under pain medication, they even saw her tail wagging.
After hours of surgery, the vets finally saw the precise path that the bullet took. They said it was a miracle that it didn’t hit her brain and barely missed two major arteries. She could have easily bled out and died.
Two days after her operation. Polo went home to her relieved and happy family. She is expected to fully recover.
