The crisis in Ukraine has revealed a lot of heroes – from brave soldiers to selfless civilians.
A dog named Patron joins this list of heroes. He has then been making the headlines for his dedication to keeping the country safe.
Patron, a bomb-sniffing dog, received recognition from none other than the Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Read more about this dog’s heroism below.
A heroic pup amid the crisis
At an awarding ceremony, Zelenskyy gave the adorable bomb-sniffing dog a medal of honor, recognizing his efforts to keep Ukraine safe amid its tension with Russia. Together with his owner Myhailo Iliev, the young Jack Russell Terrier received this award in Kyiv, the country’s capital.
Zelenskyy spoke some words of encouragement at the ceremony. He said that he wanted to award the Ukrainian heroes who were clearing the country of landmines. He gave Patron a special mention not only because of his ability to detect explosives but also for teaching children safety rules in places where there were landmine threats.
A Ukrainian news outlet shared that Patron was able to help neutralize more than 90 explosive devices.
Also attending the ceremony was Justin Trudeau, the Prime Minister of Canada. The said Canadian leader was on an unannounced visit.
Patron is a social media star
Apparently, Patron is a social media sensation. He has amassed a large following online for his sweet appearance and bomb-sniffing skills.
Earlier this year, Ukraine’s State Emergency Services shared some heartwarming pictures of Patron on Facebook. These included a picture of a child holding the cute pup. The said government organization called Patron a pyrotechnic dog that was loved by both children and adults.
Patron was also popular on Twitter. The country’s Centre for Strategic Communications and Information Security uploaded a clip of the dog while on his job. In the said video, Patron looked adorable in his vest.
